About Prof. Gary Sholler  AM

Prof. Gary Sholler  AM is a paediatric and fetal cardiologist with extensive experience and leadership in the diagnosis and care of childhood-onset heart disease and congenital heart disease. He is in hospital practice and offers private consulting.

Prof. Sholler has over 25 year’s specialist experience. He combines consulting skills and treatment planning with expert echocardiography (heart ultrasound, including fetal heart imaging when needed) and interpretation of specialist cardiac investigations. Prof. Sholler was a Fulbright Scholar and Medical Foundation Scholar of the University of Sydney, working at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital.

Prof. Sholler is the Co-Chair of the Commonwealth-funded Australian National Standards of Care for Childhood-onset Heart Disease project, and previously  developed and led the major children’s Cardiac Service in NSW.

He is a Clinical Professor in Sydney University Medical School, and has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to paediatric medicine, and to tertiary medical education.

Care Philosophy

Prof. Sholler believes an important consideration in patient care is understanding how challenging the possibility of heart disease can be for families, including the wider impacts outside immediate medical issues.

Longstanding, expert advice can improve the understanding of the situation for parents and carers, allowing guidance to the best support resources when needed.

Research

As well as his ongoing consulting and hospital clinical work in fetal and childhood heart disease, Prof. Sholler is actively involved in research, publishing over 100 co-authored papers, including over 25 in the past 5 years.

He is currently a key investigator in several major research projects (funded by NHMRC, MRFF, and Additional Ventures – USA). His research interests include complex congenital heart disease, fetal cardiology, cardiac genetics, and the psychological and neurodevelopmental impacts of the care of childhood heart disease.

He is a Clinical Professor in Sydney University Medical School.

Other Key Roles

Prof. Sholler holds national, international, regional and Australian leadership roles. He is Co-Chair of the Commonwealth funded National Standards of Care for Childhood-onset Heart Disease project, developing a framework for maintaining and expanding excellence in heart care for the future in Australia, and is on the Steering Committee for the National Action Plan for Childhood Heart Disease.
